Performing Arts has been one of the foundations of the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival ever since its debut in 2001. The festival has featured dozens of individual artists, organizations and groups playing music, dancing and even doing standup comedy over the years.

Back in 2001, there was only one stage to share the talent from our local Asian communities. The Main Performing Arts Stage is a showcase for world-class talent from our communities, and our goal has always been to feature both the educational experience of traditional Asian culture and the contemporary spirit of Asian Americans who can play rock and roll, blues, folk or jazz, or bring elements of hip-hop to a traditional dance. The Main Performing Arts Stage proves that our history is rich with wonderful performing arts traditions, but that Asian Americans aren’t just about "geeks and geishas"!

Favorite performers over the years include Denver Taiko with their thundering Japanese drums; Mudra Dance Studio’s dynamic Indian dances (shown above); the charming traditional Chinese traditions of the Christina Yeh Dance Studio; and the colorful and dynamic Dragon Dance, Lion Dances and martial arts demonstrations of Shaolin Hung Mei Kung Fu Academy. These three crowd-pleasing groups have become part of the CDBF family!

We also feature other performance stages: Gateway to Asia is an educational area that includes a stage for intimate performances and cultural demonstrations and Martial Arts; Cultural Unity is our very popular hip-hop stage featuring dance, spoken word and music, and Dragonland, the children’s area that we’ve had from the very frst year, where we’re debuting a stage for children’s performers and storytellers.

i am the chief instructor at the Denver Buddhist Temple Aikido Dojo. I was asked by Al Kawakami if we could demonstrate at the Dragon Boat Festival. I have not recieved any confirmation that we are to demonstrate or a schedule.

Are we to demonstrate? and if so both days? and what times?

    Thank you,

    Ron Abo

  2. Our group (Philippine American Society of Colorado) were past performers and would like the opportunity to perform again this year at the main Performing Art stage or Gateway to Asia. Please let us know if there are slots still open for us.

    Thanks

Hi, the deadline has already passed for applications but we’ve forwarded your comment to the Performing Arts Chairs.

this is just a question . but maybe we could have “famous” asians come to the festival and do what they do best to inspire the rest of us young teens. it’ll show us that yes there are tons of people in our community that can make it. ex. wong fu productions, kevjumba …. you know that sort of publicity might be good for us . its just a thought :)

Great suggestion, Gina, and believe us, we’d LOVE to have Asian Americans from the Coasts come and be with us for the festival! We’ve thought about the idea for several years but it’ll take some time (and bugger budgets) before we can make it a reality. Maybe soon, though! :-)

Thanks for your comment, and we hope you’ll come and enjoy the festival!
