Here are the dojos that will be demonstrate their traditions during #CDBF2016:
AMERICAN KENPO KARATE SYSTEMS
Teaching everyone more than just karate, we teach Ed Parker American Kenpo Karate, Modern Arnis, and Kodokan Judo/Grappling. We are located at the Trails Recreation Center. Our students range from ages 3 to 68 with classes for all levels and abilities. 5th Degree Black belt Fred Pleis has had the pleasure of empowering students in the Martial Arts for over 20 years. Come and make an impact with us. We will be demonstrating our three arts: Ed Parker American Kenpo, Modern Arnis weapons, and grappling skills in a high energy, fun, and entertaining performance.
COLORADO BUDOKAN KARATE
The mission of Colorado Budokan is to provide the highest level of professional instruction in the art of karate, and to promote the history, philosophy, and techniques of traditional karate-do. Head instructor of Colorado Budokan is Isao Gary Tsutsui. He began training in the art of shotokan karate in 1965 under Yutaka Yaguchi and Joseph Castillo of JKA of Colorado. At the 4th WUKO World Championships in Tokyo, Japan 1977, Sensei Tsutsui was a bronze medalist for the USA. He teaches karate at his main dojo in Denver, the Colorado Athletic Club Downtown, Colorado School of Mines, and travels extensively teaching technical seminars.
DENVER BUDDHIST TEMPLE AIKIDO
DBT Aikido was founded in the 1995 by Sensei Ronald Abo, Godan (fifth degree black belt), and his wife Lisa Abo, Nidan (second degree black belt) Sensei Ron Abo has practiced Aikido since 1978. Sensei Ron and Lisa Abo are students of Sensei Seiji Tanaka, eighth degree black belt and chairman of Tomiki Sport Aikido Association USA. Ron and Lisa are assisted by their son Ryan, shodan. Their other children, Emily and Ian also practice Aikido.
DENVER BUDDHIST TEMPLE JUDO
The Denver Buddhist Temple Judo Dojo was established in 1953 and was the first dojo to begin teaching judo or the “gentle way” in the Rocky Mountain Region. Judo is a martial art with roots in the ancient art of the Samurai, Jujitsu. Judo emphasizes the use of leverage rather than the use of strength to overcome an attack. It is practiced worldwide for recreation, for self-defense and as an Olympic sport.
DENVER SHAOLIN KUNG FU ACADEMY
The Denver Shaolin Kung Fu Academy was founded by Shaolin Master Shi Heng Chao . Having grown up and trained from an early age in the Shaolin Temple in China, Shi Heng Chao brings authentic Shaolin teachings from the 1500 year old lineage of martial Arts to the academy in Denver. The academy specializes in traditional Shaolin Kung fu fist forms, traditional weapons, animal forms and advanced weaponry training, as well as Chinese kick boxing/ grappling / iron body training.
DENVER SHAOLIN KUNG FU TAI CHI INSTITUTE
Denver Shaolin Kung Fu Tai Chi Institute has been based in Aurora CO for the last 6 years. We have been teaching traditional shaolinquan, taijiquan, wushu and sanda. We have taught 15 national champions and are taking a large team of competitors to Hong Kong next March.
GREAT WALL CHINESE ACADEMY
Great Wall Chinese Academy is a non-profit Chinese community school. We offer classes for K-12 and adults students from all culture backgrounds. Students learn Chinese language and cultures like Chinese traditional Chinese dance, kungfu, yoyo, instrument, handcraft and calligraphy and more. The dragon boat festival provides a great opportunity for our students to share culture heritage, experience the dragon boat traditions, explore local communities, and built wonderful friendship and long-lasting memories of lifetime.
KOREAN ACADEMY OF TAEKWONDO
Founded in 1980, the Korean Academy of Taekwondo is one of Colorado’s oldest and most successful martial arts schools. They have multiple locations and currently work with everyone from 2 year olds to senior citizens, from students with special needs to Olympians. Their main locations are in Aurora and Littleton but they teach in about 25 elementary schools, churches, and other location in the Denver metro area.
KURAI KOTORI NINJUTSU
Classical Ninja Training. The Ninja is a unique breed of warrior who applies their craft from the shadows, relying on trickery over brute strength. Training includes, unarmed, grappling, basic weaponry swordsmanship, staves, flails, and advanced weaponry. In effect, the Ninja is a “Jack of all trades” when it comes to training. Being taught to rely on their ingenuity, the Ninja’s methods alter to fit each situation as it occurs.
Ming De Lion Dance Cultural Troupe is a lion dance group. We strive to perform, educate, and serve the community. We teach and perform traditional Lion Dance. The group was founded to focus on helping educate the community more on Lion dance through performance and educational workshops.
SHAOLIN HUNG MEI KUNG FU

Shaolin Hung Mei Kung Fu is a non-profit association offering a comprehensive system of martial practices intended to cultivate the defense skills, health, character and spiritual development of its students. Although the martial applications of Shaolin Hung Mei form its foundation, history, theory, philosophy and culture are integral to its structure. The organization bridges the gap between Eastern and Western ideals and people by exposing the greater metro communities to a variety of Chinese traditions. SHMKF has been part of the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival since its inception. SHMKF’s Shifu, or Master, Howie Solow, is one of the founders of the festival.
SHORIN RYU SHORINKAN KARATE AT THE WHEAT RIDGE RECREATION CENTER
The Shorin Ryu Shorinkan Karate – Wheat Ridge Recreation Center class has been taught since 2000. Classes are taught in traditional Okinawan Karate and Kobudo weapons style. Sean Riley, the head instructor has been training since 1973 and recently been promoted to Kyoshi Hachidan 8th degree by Grand Master Hanshi Shugoro Nakazato Judan 10th degree.
TIGER KIM’S ACADEMY OF TAEKWONDO
Since 1976, Tiger Kim’s Academy has been teaching three major Korean martial arts of Taekwondo, Tang Soo Do and Hapkido. Founded by Grandmaster Tiger Kim, the school reflects his many years of diverse martial arts training. Taekwondo is an Official Olympic sport with competitors in over 200 countries. It is recognized by the United States Olympic and International Olympic Committees. Tang Soo Do training also involves the practice of various weapons for increased concentration, exercise. Hapkido arsenal includes grabbing, throwing, falling, jumping, and joint locking techniques.
Tyler Weaver and his team does extreme martial arts performance. Tyler started his martial arts training as soon as he was walking. Tyler is one of the world’s top leading youth martial artists. He began competing an amateur league when he was 7 and by 9 he was ready for the Elite divisions. In 1997, he won his first ISKA World Title and has earned three more since then. From there his success and extreme talent has landed him prime-time television exposure including Disney, the premier episode of “The Megan Mullally Show” and “The OPRAH Winfrey Show.” When Tyler is not training or filming, he is traveling world-wide for performances, seminars, and teaching locally at his karate school.
UNIVERSAL KEMPO KARATE SCHOOLS
Universal Kempo-Karate Schools was founded by Grand Master Martin T. Buell in Aiea Hawaii. Universal Kempo-Karate incorporates modern self-defense techniques and strategies while teaching the traditional values and art of Chinese Kempo-Karate. We will start with basic kicks and punches. Then will have our PeeWee students 4yo-6yo do a special demonstration. Then will demonstrate basic weapons techniques followed by advanced weapon techniques. Kids self defense followed by Adult self defense. We will do a special musical demonstration and finish with Brick Breaking.
