Gambare, Japan: CDBF sends heartfelt thoughts
The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival’s staff, Board of Directors and Operations Committee extend sincere condolences and a message of hope for anyone who has family and friends impacted by the terrible devastation in Japan from the Tohoku Kanto Earthquake and subsequent tsunami.
We have welcomed the involvement of the Japanese and Japanese American communities at CDBF since our very first year in 2001, and our hearts go out to the people and government of Japan.
There’s still time to enter the 2011 Community Design Competition!
Nearly 40 artists from across the country showcased their creativity and artistic flare by entering in the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival’s Third Annual Commemorative Festival Poster competition in 2010.
Laurie Romberg, a graphic designer from Evergreen, clinched first place with the poster shown here.
CDBF is now accepting submissions for the Fourth Annual Community Design Competition.
We want creative designs that capture the excitement and cultural richness of the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival for 2011. We’re accepting submissions until May 1, so start brainstorming ideas!
Call for Performers on all our stages!
Performing Arts has been one of the main attractions of the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival from the very start. Our Main Performing Arts Stage has been a showcase for the best talent, both traditional and contemporary, from the many Asian communities in Colorado. In Gateway to Asia, we have an increasingly popular stage for more intimate performances and demonstrations, and this year Gateway is adding a stage that will be split between “Find Zen” practices such as yoga and meditation, and traditional and authentic martial arts. Cultural Unity will continue to showcase our local hip-hop culture. This year we’re also adding a new stage in Dragonland, where we’ll spotlight childrens’ performers and storytellers.
Applications now being accepted for Marketplace Exhibitors and Taste of Asia Food Vendors
From the very first year, part of the fun of attending the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival has been the chance to shop in the Asian Marketplace for arts, crafts gifts, toys and clothing, and taste the wonderful variety of cuisines that makes Asian Pacific American culture so special!
In our first year, the Marketplace featured 24 vendors, including only five Food Vendors. The turnout for that first year surprised everyone, including the Festival organizers! The food vendors all had to keep bringing more food from their restaurants and shops, and several simply gave up by mid-afternoon. They ran out of food!
Each year since then, our Asian Marketplace has grown to about 80 exhibitors every year, and over 20 food vendors.
We’re now taking applications for Exhibitors and Food Vendors for 2011!

The races could not find any times or how the race is. Is it 10 minutes of boat race, then done? Is there a race every 30 minutes all day?? Please help? Also the parking at INVESCO starts at 7am-till 8pm But the festival does not start till 10 am so what is there to do from 7 am till 10 am??? or is the bus system that slow??
Hi Julie, the dragon boat races go on all day long. Many of them are very quick, and then another race starts. If yo come later during the day you’re more likely to see the faster teams racing. The divisions will be split up so some race on Saturday, and some Sunday. The final rces determine the champions of each division.
Asfor parking, we start the buses that early to accommodate volunteers and the racers who start early. The festival starts at 10, that’s correct, and the public can come anytime. The buses rn all day both days from the start to the end.
By the way, we’re redoing the race schedules but they’ll be posted soon.
Is there any drumming exhibition on either day? Always love events such as kodo, or similar. Please answer. Thanks!
Hi, Denver Taiko is the finale performance of the festival at 5:30 on Sunday on the Main Stage. They’ve been the headliners ever since the first year, in 2001. They’re as close to Kodo as you’ll find in Colorado, they’re one of the oldest taiko drum groups in America. In addition, Denver Taiko (or members of the group) will be performing more intimate demonstrations in the Gateway to Asia stage and Cultural Unity stage during the weekend. Here are the schedules for each stage:
Main Stage (Sunday): http://www.cdbf.org/performance/main-performing-arts-stage/2011-main-performing-arts-stage-schedule/
Gateway to Asia Stage (Sunday): http://www.cdbf.org/performance/gateway-to-asia/gateway-to-asia-schedule/
Cultural Unity (Saturday): http://www.cdbf.org/performance/cultural-unity/cultural-unity-stage-schedule/
Also on Saturday on the Cultural Unity stage on Saturday, there’s an African drum group performing just before Denver Taiko.
I hope you enjoy the festival — have a great time!
