Hawaiian Kite Making with Heritage Camps
Heritage Camps for Adoptive Families is fortunate to have supportive presenters, entertainers, and counselors from the various cultural communities that reflect the birth cultures of adoptees at camp. They are the racial mirrors our children need to see, learn from, and often develop lifelong relationships with. The rich & varied cultures are infused in all aspects of camp, for a meaningful and fun experience!
Southeast Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Camp, one of 9 summer camps offered by Heritage Camps for Adoptive Families, connects adoptive families with authentic cultural activities, experts on adoption, and families with shared experiences.

Domingo Belen's Kite Story
I grew up in a small hardworking town called Whitmore Village in Hawaii. Most of the town folks worked in the Pineapple or the Sugar Cane Fields. It was back breaking work for a population of 1500, mostly migrants from the Philippines. Although 80% of the community were Filipinos, we were going through a metamorphis of cultural diversity. We celebrated Hawaiian, Chinese, Japanese, Samoan, Filipino and Portuguese Culture within the backdrop of all things of America.
One event brought all of our cultures together, it was our Annual Kite Festival at Helemano Elementary School. Throughout the Month of May, all the Kids were busy making Kites…preparing for the Annual Highest Flying Kite Contest. At my school, the 6th Graders would teach the Kindergarteners and First Graders how to build a Kite out of Coconut Sticks, tape, Newspaper or phone book paper, A can and Thread.
I was amazed as kid, that I could build a kite with my own hand which actually flew. There my passion for Kites began. I would build Box Kites, Eagle Kites, tiny kites and more. Throughout the next few years I would win several highest flying kite contests at my school, becoming a mini celebrity in my town.
Each Year in May, the tradition continued at my school. The Big Kids taught the Little Kids how to make a Kite, creating a new generation of Kite Flyers. I eagerly awaited my chance to teach my Kids and I was just as excited to watch other kids build and fly their own Kite.
Over the past 4 years, I have hosted a Kite Festival in Denver. Bringing the same tradition of building Kites to the wonderful community of Denver. I look forward to bringing one of my favorite childhood memories to Colorado Dragon Boat Festival.
